It’s that time of year where the air begins to be filled with the scents of pumpkin, cinnamon, and pine needles. This time of the year is often synonymous with joy, festive decorations, and the company of loved ones. However, it's important to acknowledge that the holiday season can also be a complex tapestry of emotions, challenges, and stress. As a mental health clinician, I've witnessed firsthand the unique struggles that accompany this supposedly merry time.

Unwrapping the Holiday Challenges

Why do the holidays often become a source of distress for so many? The reasons are as diverse as snowflakes. Financial pressures, family expectations, the loss of loved ones, and the haunting ghosts of holidays past are just a few valid and common reasons the holiday season can be a challenge.

Surviving the Holidays

Because the holidays can bring about many valid stressors - many people find themselves vulnerable to returning to old behaviors or patterns that they are working to overcome and change. Problematic behaviors can be things like substance use, disordered eating, self-harm, under- or oversleeping, restlessness, immersing ourselves in technology or social media, isolating, acting out of anger or irritability, shoplifting, compulsive shopping, and on… Problematic patterns can be things like ineffective communication, poor boundaries, people pleasing tendencies, avoidance, and on...
